DAY #1:
July 8, 2006
California, Hawaii Athletes Dominate at Junior Olympics
(San Jose, Calif.) – More than 300 athletes between the ages of 6 and 12 competed during the first day of the USA Judo National Junior Olympic Championships Saturday at the San Jose State University Event Center.
Champions were crowned in 45 weight divisions with athletes from California claiming 72 overall medals while the contingent from Hawaii are currently second in the state point totals with 27 total medals.
Nahoakuwoo Salera (Honolulu, Hawaii) was recognized with the Best Technique Award for winning the 42kg Intermediate 2 (Born 1994-1995) division. Salera each of his five matches by ippon (instant win) and demonstrated dynamic throwing ability in each of his matches.
Melinda Chow (Honolulu, Hawaii) received the Sportsmanship Award after winning the 48kg Intermediate 2 division, also going 5-0 to win each of her matches by ippon. Chow dominated each match and showed a constant mat presence that demonstrated she was in control at all times. Although only ?, Chow showed a quiet confidence that manifested itself in smooth execution of her techniques.
Like Salera and Chow, Outstanding Competitor Giovonte Ortiz (Jonesboro, Geo.) won each of his matches in the Intermediate 2 48kg division by ippons – six in total. Ortiz won each match with a variety of different techniques, scoring ippons off pins, throws and switches.
En route to his gold medal win, Ortiz defeated several difficult opponents, including Michael Assels (Garland, Texas) who won each of three junior national events in 2005 as well as the international Junior U.S. Open.
In the final, Ortiz defeated Lance Asuka (Aiea, Hawaii) in what Ortiz would describe as his toughest match of the day.
“I fought pretty well today. I just went out and did fought how I usually do here,” Ortiz said. “Lance was definitely my hardest match, but I beat him with a hip throw and a counter,” Ortiz said.
Asuka would then go on to beat Assels to win the silver medal.
Competition continues for 13-19-year-olds in the Juvenile A, B and IJF Junior divisions on Sunday with matches beginning at 9:30 a.m. and concluding around 3 p.m.
Sunday’s matches will be one of the last opportunities for athletes to obtain critical points on the IJF Junior (under 20) roster in order to qualify to compete in the Junior World Trials, July 29 in Fort Lauderdale.

Day #2:
July 9, 2006
Day 2 Junior Olympic National Championship Results
(San Jose, Calif.) – The second day of competition at the USA Judo National Junior Olympic Championships brought together nearly 300 competitors between 13-19-years-old and showcased many top junior athletes to be watched during the next few years.
Wesley Thomas (San Mateo, Calif./Palo Alto Judo Club) stood out in his Junior Olympic event, winning the IJF Junior (under 20) 81kg division and the Best Technique Award as he went 4-0 to win gold. Thomas, who also began training with the San Jose State University club two years ago, threw Anthony Phelps (Dayton, Ohio/Renshuden) with a taio toshi in the final to take match.
Jeff Fujimoto (Los Angeles, Calif./Sawtelle Judo Club/Nanka) won Outstanding Competitor Honors after he won one of the most difficult divisions in the tournament – IJF Junior 60kg.
After a first-round bye, Fujimoto fought Josh Peacott-Ricardos (Mililani, Hawaii/Shobukan Judo Club) who had just come off of a first-round defeat of Aaron Kunihiro (Covina, Calif./San Gabriel Judo). Both Kunihiro and Fujimoto were 55kg players in 2005 who have since moved up to 60kg, an Olympic weight division. Kunihiro won the silver medal at last year’s Senior Pan Ams, but ran into a tough division at this weekend’s event and finished fifth overall.
Fujimoto’s first match against the Peacott-Ricardos was a close one with Fujimoto winning by a waza-ari (half-point). In his next two matches, Fujimoto defeated Brent Kataoka (West Covina, Calif./Nanka/San Gabriel) and Alex Kadokkura (Cupertino, Calif./Cupertino Judo Club) to advance to the finals where he would meet Peacott-Ricardos a second time after he fought his way through the loser’s pool.
Fujimoto defeated the Hawaiian, this year’s Collegiate National Champion, a second time to win the division.
“That was my best fight of the day and also my toughest,” said Fujimoto who likely would be one to watch at the Junior World Trials, July 29 in Fort Lauderdale. His finish this weekend would potentially give him a fourth seed at the event, but the 17-year-old will be training in Japan during Trials.
“I’ll still be able to try and compete at Junior Worlds in two years, but this year I’m going to spend a month in Japan training at the Kodokan,” he said. “Everyone knows how great the Japanese are, so I’m looking forward to going there and seeing how they train and seeing more in-depth how they got so good.”
Daniel Chow (Honolulu, Hawaii/Hawaii Tenri) continued to carry on a rich family judo history, winning both the IJF 66kg division and the Sportsmanship Award – an honor also given to his sister Melinda Chow after Saturday’s event. The Chow children include a third sister, Chrissy Chow, who also won her division Sunday – Girls Juvenile A (born in 1992-1993) 53kg. The Chows parents also were excellent fighters in their day. Robin Chapman was a frequent National Team member in the 1980s and father Greg Chow also was a fixture on the national scene at the time.
Although Chow is indeed well-pedigreed, his road to the gold medal wasn’t an easy one. After a first-round win over Ryan Bratton (Northglenn, Colo./Northglenn Judo), Chow went on to beat 2006 High School National Champion Ross Nakamura (Mission Hills, Calif./Valley Judo/Nanka) and then Zach Stephens (San Leandro, Calif./Amador Judo Team) to advance to the medal rounds against Joseph Hashimoto (Thornton, Colo./Northglenn Judo).
Joseph, younger brother of Kenny Hashimoto who is the #2 senior at 66kg, also is ranked on the senior elite roster and is one of the top high school wrestlers in Colorado.
Hashimoto won the first final match in the true double bracket, sending Chow down to fight the winner of the loser’s pool – which happened to be Nakamura. Chow beat Nakamura a second time to move back up to fight Hashimoto again. This time Chow beat Hashimoto twice more to win a total of six matches during the day and, most importantly, the gold medal.
One of the bigger surprises in the IJF divisions occurred when top-ranked junior Tony Sangimino (Burlingame, Calif./Cahill’s Judo), a two-time Pan American Junior silver medalist went 0-2 with losses against Mike Kannianen (Northglenn, Colo./Northglenn Judo Club) and Giorgio Gazzani (Panorama City, Calif./Valley Judo Institute) to finish third overall.
In the IJF 90kg division, Jacob Larsen (Santa Rosa, Calif.) went undefeated, 4-0, to win his first Junior Olympic title in this division and help solidify his #2 seed going into the trials.
In the Juvenile divisions, Antonio Rodriguez (Miami, Fla./Budokan Judo) was one of the most technically sound players among the younger set, going 4-0 with several spectacular throws to win the Juvenile B (born 1990-1991) 73kg division.
Kyle Taketa (Torrance, Calif./Gardena) was one of the top athletes to watch in the Juvenile A (born 1992-1993) division. Taketa, a 2005 Pan American Infantile Championships gold medalist, defeated his former Pan Am teammate Max Golembo (Vernon Hills, Ill./Cohen’s Judo) at 53kg to win the division 5-0.
Golembo, who had fought well in advancing to the final against Taketa, had to drop down to the loser’s bracket to beat Jacob Hoshino (Pearl City, Hawaii/Waipahu Hongwanji Judo).
Taketa prevailed a second time when he met Golembo again in the second final to win gold.
On the women’s side, Kayla Harrison (Middletown, Ohio/Renshuden) and Katie Sell (Oshkosh, Wis./Welcome Mat Judo) continued their newfound friendly rivalry with a new series of matches. Sell continues to hold the #1 junior ranking at 70kg, but 15-year-old Harrison defeated Sell during their last match-up at the High School Nationals and Sunday the two fought a total of four times in two divisions – 70kg and Open.
Each time Kayla came out on top, throwing Sell in less than a minute per match to win both divisions. The two are expected to clash again at least once at the Junior World Trials.
In the IJF Junior 48kg division Corey-Jo Tashima (Mililani, Hawaii/Shobukan Judo Club) faltered only once, losing after a first-round bye to Brenna Clark (Hercules, Calif./Okubu/East Bay Judo Institute). The loss meant Tashima would have to fight her way through the loser’s bracket to make it back up to the final.
Tashima defeated 2006 Pan Am Junior Team member Cassandra Bezoski (Amherst, Ohio/Chu To Bu), Collegiate Nationals silver medalist Tabitha Lum (San Jose, Calif./San Jose State University) and Clark again to have a chance at the title. In the two-part final Tashima posted both wins over Samantha Batoon (Honolulu, Hawaii/Hawaii Tenri) to earn gold with a 5-1 record.
The IJF Junior 57kg division also proved to be an interesting mix with three athletes (Hana Carmichael, Pauline Macias and Tara Clark) who each have the same rank on the roster with 10 points a piece. Clearly in this division, a Junior Olympic title was at stake, but so were key points leading into trials.
Hana Carmichael (Hialeah, Fla./Budokan) won the division with five wins, including two over Pauline Macias (Lancaster, Calif./Antelope Valley) who fought well in her first junior tournament after an illness kept her from competing at this year’s Junior Pan Ams.
Macias, who lost to newcomer Danica Kamakana (Honolulu, Hawaii/Kamehameha Judo Club) shut out Carmichael’s sister Leila with a win in the loser’s pool that eliminated Leila from the event. Macias then won three more in order to get to her final matches with Hana.
Tara Clark (Hercules, Calif./Okubu/East Bay Judo Institute), who had been quickly dispatched with a throw for ippon (instant win) by Nausikaa Davis (Renton, Wash./Zenyu Judo Dojo) won her first match in the loser’s pool, but lost her second to Paola Genao-Butler (Houston, Texas/Champion) and finished fifth overall.
Over the course of the two-day tournament, Shobukan Judo Club and Hawaii Tenri, both in Honolulu, were first-and second-place overall clubs at the event, respectively, followed by Southern California’s Hayastan.
California was the winnigest state, followed by Hawaii and then Colorado.
