The Great Colorado Judo League – In the past 4 years, we…
  1. Reinstated the Colorado Judo League Black Belt Promotion Board which has standardized the knowledge for our black belts in Colorado
  2. Competed and won the novice division in Dragon Boat Racing!  Why this comes up #2 thought in my mind…
  3. So many open workouts that traveled from club to club
  4. I feel like I can walk into any of your dojos and be welcomed as one of your own.
  5. Brought Keiko Fukuda’s Joshi Judo Camp to Colorado and will do so again the summer of 2021
  6. Hosted the Youth Nationals in Colorado Springs, CO and shared our beautiful state with hundreds of coaches, athletes, and referees.
  7. We have watched our favorite coaches Scott & Heidi Moore and Eddie Liddie on Ippon.tv as they coached countless international tournaments.
  8. We watched frantically as Coloradan D’Artanyan Crocket and Californian Christella Garcia fought and won bronze in the 2016 Paralympics.  Colorado hosts two more 2020/now 2021 Paralympic hopefuls Ben Goodrich and Robert Tanaka.
  9. Thanks to Marcos and the entire Batan family, Max Ariza and the JWU crew, the Colorado State Tournament has become the tournament of the year not only in our state but our region!  This is also CJL’s biggest and most successful fund raiser of the year.
  10. We were there when Northglenn Judo Club celebrated their 50th Annual Judo Tournament.
  11. When rules changed after the 2016 Olympics, Colorado A-level referee Edson Mallo was chosen to go Baku, Azerbaijan to learn and when he came back he shared the new rules with CO & WY coaches and referees.
  12. Funded 2020 (2021) Olympic hopefuls with clinics and donations for Nick Delpopolo and Alaa El Idrissi.  Our judoka have been so generous.
  13. Learned from and were amazed by Judo greats Marti Malloy, Jimmy Pedro, and Lkhamdegd Purevjargal.  Dakota never missed a single session of any clinic CJL hosted.
  14. Held grueling tournament preparation judo camps that you were proud to survive and that made the tournament seem like an easy practice.  And if you attended every camp workout you were a true rock star like Julia Catalini, Garmaa Shinebauer, and I’ll include Jayson Oldfather even though he ran the camps, he also participated in all the exercises and randori.
  15. Held annual Coaching Certification clinics where we shared valuable skills from each other and other Coach masterminds from outside Colorado.  Dennis Mercer, Warren Agena, and Jean Luc Moreau put on a coaching clinic that is by far the best that I’ve ever attended.
  16. Became Social!  Facebook, Instagram, …and stuff
  17. We have 3! IJF Level 2 Certified Instructors – Grace Jividen Truesdale, Jayson Oldfather, and Tracy Crawford
  18. Have been profitable every year! (…until 2020)
  19. Which brings me to provided funding to our dojos in this COVID-19 pandemic time of need
  20. Moved into the decade and bought a Care System!  Thanks Marcos and Max!
  21. Created a budding Junior Referee program and are starting to train the next generation.  Ian L. was our first.
  22. Continue to bring in the New Year with DBT and Kan Geiko training
  23. This wasn’t our doing, but it has been fantastic to benefit from and support the Senior and Veterans World Training Camps at the Olympic Training Center
  24. We are one of the three most popular Zoom workouts during this pandemic (in my mind at least).  (We are trailing behind Jimmy Pedro and Nick Delpopolo)
  25. Most importantly we have grown and supported each other as one big family.

It has been a fun 4 years and I am so excited to see what the future brings.  Congrats again to our new Board!
Love,
Tracy

Congrats to Deputy Bacon on the 2017 World Police and Fire Games

Senior Deputy Jim Bacon has once again taken home the gold medal in Judo from the 2017 World Police and Fire Games
"I started Judo when I was 10 years old in McCall, Idaho and I have been training in the sport ever since," said Deputy Bacon.

In 1986, Deputy Bacon was invited to train at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. There he spent nine years training and was lucky enough to travel and compete in Judo at competitions in Europe, Asia and South America.

After his time at the Olympic Training Center, Deputy Bacon was given the opportunity to compete in the World Police and Fire Games. In 2001, Bacon won gold at the games in Indianapolis, he took home the bronze medal during the 2011 games in New York City and in 2015 he took home gold at the games in Fairfax, Virginia.

"It was a great experience to win my third gold medal at the World Police and Fire Games. I just turned 54 and to be able to compete, and medal in the sport that I love is a blessing," said Deputy Bacon.

In fact, Bacon's love for the sport has given him the opportunity to share his passion with others in the community.

"I am a fourth degree black belt and an instructor at Northglenn Judo," said Deputy Bacon. "Having a student tell me I’ve made a positive impact in their lives with Judo is priceless."

Deputy Bacon says he is thankful for his partners in the ACSO Patrol Division who he says are incredibly supportive of his Judo competitions.

"I value opportunities to share my passion and the benefits of Judo with others," said Deputy Bacon.

Congratulations Deputy Bacon on this great achievement!

New IJF ruleset For Denver Judo 2017 Spring Tournament

Attention! We will be using the new rule set recently sent out by the IJF at the Denver Judo Spring Tournament.  Changes to be aware of:

  • There is no yuko score. All scores will be Waza ari or Ippon.   Waza ari do not add up to Ippon.
  • Scores will be awarded for hold downs as follows: 10 - 19 seconds = waza ari and 20 seconds = ippon.
  • The first offense for touching below the belt during tachi waza will be shido. The second offense will be hansokumake.
  • All senior matches, males and female will be 4 minutes.  Juniors and masters will be 3 minutes.
  • Matches must be won by a positive score ie you cannot win by shido in regulation time.  In golden score you can win via shido.
  • The emphasis on these changes is to promote positive and aggressive judo.  Gripping rules have been relaxed to facilitate more technical judo.
  • Please visit the attached document for a complete list of the updated rules. http://www.jfaq.com.au/upload/ijf_2017_rules_-_jfa_update_dec_16.pdf

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Thank you.

Joshi (Women's) Judo Camp - Colorado Center for the Blind July 22 - 24

Flyer HERE

Attached is the flyer for the Joshi Judo camp that will be held at the Colorado Center for the Blind on July 22-24.  We have women from all over the country flying in for the event.  For 3 days of camp, the preregistration fee is $200 if mailed in by June 30.  Like I was telling you at the CJL meeting this weekend, if you have any female athletes who would like to come but cannot afford the fee, we have scholarships where they can help work the event in lieu of payment.  Either the sensei or the student can call or email me to get this set up.

My sister took me to my first Joshi Judo Camp when I was a teenager and it changed my life forever.  That is why when I moved to Denver, I asked my sensei, Eiko Shepherd, if we could host it here since sensei-Fukuda's passing, this event moves about to give this opportunity to women in other parts of the country. Please have your athletes reach out if they would like to attend but need assistance. This is not something they would want to miss and is something they will never forget.

Sincerely,
Tracy Crawford-Hangley
